Sir John Lloyd Lecture 2025
Helen Fulton
‘Gentry Families and their Poets in Late-Medieval Brecon’
The fourteenth to sixteenth centuries were the high point of Welsh praise poetry to the families of local gentry, the uchelwyr. This lecture traces some of the history of the lordship of Brecon and its neighbours through the poetry composed to its networks of gentry families, including the Herberts, Games, and Vaughans.
Professor Helen Fulton lives in Swansea and is Chair in Medieval Literature at the University of Bristol. She has published widely on medieval Welsh literature and its links with English and European literary traditions. She is the editor of the essay collection, Urban Culture in Medieval Wales (2012), and co-editor of the Cambridge History of Welsh Literature (2019). She is currently leading a research project funded by the ERC and UKRI on the medieval March of Wales.
