An Evening with Douglas Rattray: The Battle of Isandlwana (The Day of the Dead Moon)

Join us at the Royal Welsh Museum for a unique evening of history, storytelling, and exclusive access to rarely displayed treasures from our collections, as we welcome renowned battlefield guide and historian Doug Rattray.

Doug Rattray, of Fugitives’ Drift Lodge near the Anglo-Zulu War battlefields in South Africa, continues the legacy of his late father, David Rattray, whose name became synonymous with the interpretation of the Anglo-Zulu War. Today, Doug is recognised internationally for his exceptional knowledge, passion, and captivating storytelling.

In his acclaimed talk, “The Battle of Isandlwana (The Day of the Dead Moon)”, Doug examines one of the most dramatic battles of the Anglo-Zulu War, presenting the story from both the British and Zulu perspectives. He explores the courage of soldiers facing overwhelming odds and the gallantry of the proud Zulu warriors who achieved one of the most remarkable victories in military history.

Anyone who has experienced Doug speaking on the battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift will understand why his presentations are so highly regarded. Bringing the events of 22 January 1879 vividly to life, Doug offers an unforgettable insight into the people, decisions, and actions that shaped this historic day.

6.00pm – 7.00pm | Reception in the Museum
Begin the evening with a glass of bubbly and a selection of canapés while enjoying the opportunity to view a number of fascinating museum treasures that are not normally on public display.

7.00pm – 8.00pm | The Battle of Isandlwana (The Day of the Dead Moon)
A one-hour illustrated talk by Douglas Rattray.
